IN SAFE HANDS
Glenn and Julie Stevens moved to Mt Martha in 2014 after living and working north of the city for many years. It was when they got to know the Mornington Peninsula that they decided to make the move. “I started playing football in Mornington and we loved the area so much we knew we wanted to make the Mornington Peninsula our home,” explains Glenn.
Bricher Insurance is a family business, and daughter Emily is now the third generation involved in the company. Says Glenn, “My parents started the business in 1984 with an office in Blackburn. I joined them in 1990 to help them expand and then bought them out when they retired. In 2018 we took the opportunity to move the business closer to home, setting up an office in Mornington.”
Service is the core of Bricher Insurance. They have never advertised, other than small community-based sponsorships. The business has been built on word-of-mouth. “When my stepfather started the company his focus was on service, service, service. He believed that if you always give your clients the very best customer service they will recommend you to others. I have carried that on. It’s not all about the bottom line, my goal is to ensure that my clients are fully protected with their insurance and that when they need it they will get the full benefit of their insurance policy. We might not be the cheapest, but we definitely offer the best cover and service that we possibly can for the best price.”
Bricher Insurance offers all types of general insurance (motor vehicles, houses, businesses, property, commercial etc), they’re not a life insurance or superannuation brokerage.
So what is the role of an Insurance Broker?
Simply, to save you time, money and worry. Just like an accountant or lawyer who provides you with professional advice based on years of training and experience, a qualified broker can do the same with your insurance. Whether it’s home, car or business insurance, brokers provide advice and assistance to make sure you are properly protected.
When arranging insurance without dedicated professional advice, many people take shortcuts and fail to understand the policies they are purchasing, not knowing whether they are getting value for money. Often they are disappointed when their insurance doesn't respond in the way they believed it should.
Brokers have access to many different policies because they deal with a wide range of insurance companies and sometimes other types of underwriters as well. A broker will be aware of the benefits, exclusions and costs of competing policies on the market. They will also help arrange and place the cover and can often provide advice on how to make the most of your insurance budget.
Going direct to an insurance company may appear cheaper, but without the specialist interpretation and tailoring to your specific needs, going direct may well turn out to be an extremely expensive exercise. Using an insurance broker can even cost you less because brokers have knowledge of the insurance market and the ability to negotiate competitive premiums on your behalf. A broker’s duty is to explain your policy and any special situations you need to watch out for.

“Our team has been working from home since early March due to COVID-19," explains Glenn, "but we have done our best to keep a sense of camaraderie and banter by having Microsoft Teams running all day while we work from our home offices or kitchens or spare rooms."
"The current circumstances have had a huge impact on a number of industries, and the insurance industry has undergone tremendous strain since the bushfire crisis in late 2019 and a few international disasters. However other industries like hospitality and tourism have been decimated and we really feel for those involved. The world of insurance isn’t suffering to that same degree, we’ve seen more of a slowing of business rather than being crippled by COVID-19. Having been in business for over 35 years we have seen a number of crisis like the GFC, but this is definitely the worst time we’ve seen from both a professional and personal point of view. I like to remain positive in my outlook though, and I do see hope ahead. In a few years’ time we’ll look back and hopefully see this time as a hiccup rather than anything more permanent.”
