There is so much to love about the Mornington Peninsula right? The beautiful coastline, both bay and back beach, the wineries, the shopping, the restaurants and the relaxed lifestyle.
For many though, it’s the golf courses that are the main attraction. And for good reason too. The Mornington Peninsula is home to (at last count) 18 golf courses. That’s pretty extraordinary. And given that The National Golf Club in Cape Shanck is ranked 9th out of the world’s top 87 golf club there is an immense amount to be proud of too.
So if you are a golf enthusiast, or if you’re thinking about taking up the game for sport or recreation, there’s a golf course perfect for you. There’s a fantastic variety of play for novices and experts, with links, parkland and resort courses waiting just for you in Australia’s #1 golf destination.
Golf is pretty much a year round sport, especially for those faithful who brave the golf course rain, hail or shine. Our mild climate, fast-draining sandy soils and sand dunes create the ideal environment (and some tricky challenges to).
It’s the spectacular coastal views, unique vistas, bush backdrops and tranquil hinterland added to first grade courses that make Mornington Peninsula golf courses so sought after, particularly with excellent on-course accommodation available at a number of sites.
There’s a huge choice of golf courses to choose from, whether you play relaxed, social rounds with a group of friends or if you prefer a more demanding challenge. The Open course at Moonah Links provides such a challenge, described by designer Peter Thomson as the ‘Leviathan’ - as it’s “one of the largest creatures on the planet”.
Peter Thomson is just one of the golf legends who have designed some of our magnificent local courses, along with Robert Trent Jones Jnr, Ross Perrett, Tony Cashmore, Tom Doak and Greg Norman who have all been inspired by the extraordinary terrain on the Mornington Peninsula. As a result, Golf Australia has ranked nine of the courses amongst the top 80 public access courses in Australia.
About The National Golf Club:
Launching in February 1985 as an equity shareholding, The National Golf Club opened for play in March 1988. Following the purchase of a spectacular piece of land on the adjoining property (amongst the sand dunes with the coastline to Port Phillip Heads in the background) an additional two 18 holes courses were constructed and opened for play by the end of the year 2000.
The National Golf Club now has three exceptional and highly regarded 18 hole golf courses, the Old Course, the Moonah Course and the Ocean Course, ensuring that it ranks as the best piece of golf real estate in the country offering a unique 54 holes.
Old Course:
A dramatically beautiful course with unsurpassed views of the coastline, this often windy course tests even the most talented golfers.
Ocean Course:
The Ocean course was designed to work with the natural land contours of the land with a wonderful sense of space and freedom during your round.
Moonah Course:
Rugged bunkering that is consistent with the natural landform is a key design feature of the Moonah course. It is a fair but challenging course with exceptionally maintained fairways and greens. The inspiring “Cups” country scenery is less dramatic than the coastline views of the other two courses, but is equally breathtaking. The course highlight, from all accounts, is on the Old Course, 7th Hole, Par 3, 139 metres. The dramatic backdrop is spectacular.
Each golf course on the Mornington Peninsula has something special to offer - the landscape, the clubhouse, the facilities. Why not try them all out and find the right one for you?
