THE LOCAL FILES: JAMES O'HALLORAN

James O’Halloran loves the Mornington Peninsula. Growing up in Mt Eliza and attending The Peninsula School (now Peninsula Grammar), James did an electrical apprenticeship with a company in Patterson Lakes before landing a role with a large commercial company. During his six years there he worked his way up through the company to become a Project Manager running massive, multi-level high rise buildings right across Melbourne.

“I became fascinated by home automation after working on all of the primary schools across the Mornington Peninsula around 2008," say James. “Every single primary school had a new building built under the Rudd government initiative, and I ran the projects for all of these schools as a foreman along with another tradesman and two apprentices. We completed around 20 schools over a three year period.”

James was then promoted to a senior foreman role running multi-level building projects starting with Rosebank Apartments in Clayton which had 185 apartments in the complex. His focus was primarily on planning, delegating and organising his team. They also worked on two mental institutions in Dandenong and Narre Warren, on the Emblem Apartments (105 apartments and six shops in Glenferrie Road) and he completed a nearby block of 100 apartments and the Viva Apartments block of 50 apartments in Carnegie as well.

Explains James, “I’ve really seen all sides of major multi-level projects and have an understanding of the broad spectrum of requirements for builds like these. I found myself in a position where I had the expertise to go out on my own, so I launched O’Halloran Electrics in 2013."

"I love being able to work locally and look after locals with a level of professionalism and attention to detail that has been the cornerstone of my career. Being involved in the local community is very important to me. We now have a team of four tradespeople including myself, plus an apprentice and Tayla who looks after our administration."

“Home automation is our specialty. I have created my own system where I integrate a number of models into one interface, with C-Bus being one of the key components. So we personalise each installation to suit the individual needs of the person, family or business. I have taught myself how to program and network which gives us a real advantage when wiring a house as a smart home. The technology needs to be pre-programmed, and we do all of that in-house, from AV and audio to security, lighting controls, blinds – anything that has a motor really. There’s not many electricians around who can both program and install these technologies. The major systems we install are bullet-proof, we program them and they are set and forget.”

And now James O’Halloran is about to launch a new world of technology in Mornington, called Peninsula Technologies Centre.
