THE LOCAL FILES: SIMON WEILL

Simon Weill (centre), his brother David (left) and close friend Nathan are the trio behind the much loved South Beach Project (and local family favourite, Volpino). Nathan is the Executive Chef of both restaurants, whilst David looks after Volpino and Simon focuses on South Beach Project. He and his brother understand food, wine and heartfelt hospitality, learning to appreciate these three key factors from their grandfather who owned a chocolate shop. They were brought up with a love of food in their veins, and a love of creating a warm and welcoming environment.

Set in one of Mt Martha’s most loved, and most iconic locations, South Beach Project is a favourite spot for locals and travellers to enjoy a fabulous breakfast, brunch, lunch or coffee right across the road from South Beach. Officially opening in January 2018, the team have brought the location back to life.

“Over the last two years we have both consolidated and evolved the South Beach Project concept,” explains Simon. “Whilst we still offer well priced, delicious food in a relaxed environment, our menu now has a more Asian influence. It’s the type of cuisine that Nathan, David and I really love."

"There aren't many beachside restaurants on the Mornington Peninsula that offer the standard of Asian food we are serving. It’s really important to us that we create the most delicious food but also that we provide a really casual, beachside vibe where we welcome families with children and large groups too. Dogs are also welcome of course. The whole gang can join us straight off the beach in bathers and barefoot without a care. How great to have a place to relax and dine right by the water?”

South Beach Project is open for breakfast and lunch serving casual meals to anyone who wants to pop in. You can come straight in from the beach with no dress regulations - thongs, singlets, barefoot – everyone’s welcome, sand and all.

It's easy, breezy, delicious food - their all day menu offers up the usual suspects plus contemporary Aussie fare, with treats like Buckwheat Crepes, Mango Coulis, pineapple, lemon sorbet & toasted coconut; Fried Noodle Omelette, Ginger Sesame Smoked Salmon, Nori, Chilli & Spring Onion; Zucchini & Kale Fritters, Beetroot Relish, Greens & Herb Oil or a Breaky Burger with a Fried Egg, Bacon, Cheese, Ketchup and Greens.

“My personal favourite dish for breakfast is the Acai Bowl and for lunch if I’m feeling a little naughty it’s hard to go past the chicken burger and chips. Highly recommended!”

* Acai Bowl, Seasonal Fruit, Goji, Nutty Granola, Chia and Flax Crisps (gf) (v) (vg) (n): $18

* Crispy Chicken Burger, Siracha Mayo, Crispy Asian Slaw, Milk Bun with Chips: $22

Whilst they don’t open for dinner (head to Volpino for that pleasure), South Beach Project hosts special wine/dine events (follow them on Instagram for notifications and booking details). And it is also the most stunning beachside spot for hosting special occasions. With breathtaking views of Port Phillip Bay (and the Melbourne city skyline in the distance), set only a 100m from the sandy shore and with a blend of indoor/outdoor options, where better to celebrate?

“Over the last two years we have hosted wonderful weddings, special birthdays and corporate functions too which have all been really well received. Our food offering is first class and the location hard to beat.”
